Words Per Minute (WPM) is the universally accepted standard for measuring typing speed across the world. One "word" in typing metrics is conventionally defined as five characters (including spaces and punctuation). This standardization allows for fair comparisons between different typing methods, keyboards, and individuals. A professional typist typically achieves 65-75 WPM, while fast typists and competitive typists can reach 100-150 WPM or more. Understanding your WPM helps you identify areas for improvement, benchmark your progress over time, and understand how your typing speed affects overall productivity in professional and personal contexts.
This WPM Speed Test tool provides a comprehensive evaluation of your typing capabilities by measuring both speed and accuracy simultaneously. The test calculates your gross WPM (total characters typed divided by five, then by time) and your net WPM (which subtracts errors from the gross calculation for a more realistic assessment). Accuracy is tracked in real-time, showing you the percentage of correct versus incorrect keystrokes. This dual-metric approach ensures you understand not just how fast you type, but how reliably you can produce error-free text, which is equally important in professional environments.
The WPM Speed Test tool also offers a built-in history feature that stores your last 10 test results in your browser's local storage. This allows you to track your improvement over time, identify patterns in your performance, and set personal goals. You can also paste your own custom text to test your speed on specific content, such as code snippets, technical documentation, foreign language text, or any content relevant to your work. This makes the tool valuable for developers, writers, students, and professionals who need to evaluate typing performance on domain-specific material.
Standard Alt Codes are a foundational character encoding system originally developed by Microsoft for Windows operating systems. When you hold down the Alt key and type a numeric code on the numeric keypad (with Num Lock enabled), your computer interprets the number as a reference to a specific character in the Windows Code Page 437 (OEM) character set. This system was designed to allow users to insert special characters, symbols, accented letters, and other glyphs that are not available on standard keyboard layouts. Alt codes remain one of the most accessible methods for typing special characters without needing to copy and paste from external sources or install additional software.
The standard Alt Code system covers decimal values from 1 to 255, providing a comprehensive collection of characters including currency symbols (โฌ, ยฃ, ยฅ, ยข), mathematical operators (ยฑ, ร, รท, โ, โ), punctuation marks (โ, โ, โ , โก, โข, โฆ), accented and diacritical characters for European languages (ร, ร, ร, ร, ร, รฃ, รถ, รผ, รง, ร), directional arrows (โ, โ, โ, โ), and many other useful symbols. These codes are particularly valuable in word processing, spreadsheet applications, HTML development, and any context where special characters are needed. While Unicode has largely superseded Alt Codes in modern computing, Alt Codes remain widely supported in Windows applications and continue to be used by professionals who need quick access to special characters in legacy software environments.
This reference table provides quick lookup for the most commonly used Alt Codes. Simply find the symbol you need, note its Alt Code number, and type it by holding Alt and entering the number on your numpad. You can also click the ๐ copy button next to each symbol to copy it directly to your clipboard. The search filter allows you to quickly find specific characters by name, code, or symbol. For best results, ensure you have a full-size keyboard with a dedicated numeric keypad, as Alt Codes require numpad input and are not accessible through the top-row number keys.

Extended Alt Codes build upon the foundation of Standard Alt Codes by leveraging the full Unicode character set, dramatically expanding the range of characters you can insert on your Windows system. While Standard Alt Codes are limited to the 256-character Windows Code Page 437 (OEM) character set, Extended Alt Codes use Unicode decimal values (typically 0256 and above) to access thousands of additional characters. When you hold Alt and type a Unicode decimal value on the numpad (such as Alt+8364 for โฌ, or Alt+9786 for โบ), your system interprets the number as a Unicode code point and inserts the corresponding character. This approach unlocks access to emoji, mathematical symbols, musical notation, chess pieces, playing card suits, geometric shapes, and virtually every character in the Unicode standard.
The Extended Alt Codes system is particularly valuable for content creators, developers, and professionals who need to work with special characters across multiple languages and symbol sets. Unicode provides a universal standard that covers virtually every written language on Earth, including Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Devanagari, Thai, and many more scripts. The extended codes also include specialized symbol categories such as mathematical operators (โซ, โ, โ, โ, โ, โ ), geometric shapes (โ, โ , โฒ, โ, โฌ), arrow symbols (โ, โ, โ, โ, โ, โง), currency symbols (โฌ, ยฃ, ยฅ, โน, โฉ, โฟ), and decorative characters (โ , โฅ, โ , โฃ, โฆ, โซ, โช). This table provides a curated collection of the most useful extended Alt Codes, organized with their Unicode hex values, symbols, names, decimal Alt Codes, and HTML entities for easy reference and quick copying.
To use Extended Alt Codes, you must have a full-size keyboard with a dedicated numeric keypad, and Num Lock must be enabled. Some applications may require you to enable Unicode support or use specific input methods to correctly render extended characters. In modern browsers and operating systems, most Unicode characters are fully supported, making Extended Alt Codes a reliable method for inserting special characters in web pages, documents, spreadsheets, and other text-based applications. The search filter on this page allows you to quickly locate specific characters by name, Unicode hex value, or symbol glyph.

Key ghosting is a common limitation in budget and membrane keyboards caused by their internal matrix circuitry. When multiple keys are pressed simultaneously, the keyboard's controller may fail to register one or more of the inputs, resulting in missed characters or unresponsive game actions. This occurs because keyboard matrices share electrical pathways, and pressing multiple keys can create ambiguous voltage states that the controller cannot resolve. The more keys you press at once, the higher the likelihood of ghosting on a non-anti-ghosting keyboard.
This Ghosting Test Mode helps you identify exactly which key combinations your keyboard fails to handle. Simply press and hold 3-5 keys simultaneously (like WASD + Space for gaming), and the tool will visually track which keys register and which ones are ghosted. Green indicators show successful registration, while red flashing keys indicate missed inputs. For competitive gaming, professional typing, or complex software workflows, a keyboard with full N-key rollover (NKRO) or at least anti-ghosting support is highly recommended. Regular testing ensures your hardware can keep up with your fastest inputs without losing critical data. We recommend testing common gaming combos like WASD+Space, WASD+Shift+Space, and QWER+Space to find your keyboard's true simultaneous key limit.
Press and hold multiple keys simultaneously to test for ghosting:

For the best experience, use your physical mouse to interact with the virtual buttons and drag targets.
Mouse failures are among the most common peripheral issues and can stem from multiple causes. The most frequent problem is double-clicking (left or right click registering twice per press), caused by worn-out microswitches inside the mouse. This is especially common after 1-2 years of heavy use. Scroll wheel failures occur when the encoder mechanism gets dirty or worn, causing erratic scrolling behavior. Tracking issues can result from a dirty optical sensor, damaged sensor lens, or worn sensor pad on the mouse feet. Wireless connectivity problems may be caused by dead batteries, interference from other wireless devices, or a damaged USB receiver. Button mushiness or unresponsiveness happens when debris accumulates under the buttons or the spring mechanism fatigues over time. RGB lighting failures are usually due to damaged LED strips, loose ribbon cables, or firmware corruption.
To troubleshoot mouse issues, start with the simplest solutions first. For double-clicking: try using compressed air to blow out debris from under the click switches. If that doesn't work, the microswitch may need replacement (requires soldering). For scroll wheel issues: rotate the wheel rapidly while blowing compressed air through the gaps, or try the mouse on a different surface. For tracking problems: clean the sensor lens with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol, replace worn mouse feet/skis, and ensure the surface has adequate contrast. For wireless issues: replace batteries, move the receiver closer using a USB extension cable, and eliminate potential interference sources. For button issues: use compressed air around the button edges and clean with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. For RGB issues: check for firmware updates from the manufacturer, reset the mouse to factory settings, and inspect for physical damage to the LED strip. If problems persist across multiple mice, the issue may be with the USB port, computer USB controller, or power management settings.
